Brew day at award-winning Discretion Brewing

Beer styles are not fixed targets. They're conversations — shaped by ingredients, technology, culture, and the people who show up to brew and drink them.

The Bay Area Brewers Guild presents:

The Official SF Beer Week 2026 Collaborations

Six Beers Showcasing 30 Years of IPA

Regional Guild chapters are collaborating on different expressions of the 21st-century story of IPA. Not nostalgia pieces, but cover songs: tasty interpretations of how the style has been brewed, presented, evolved and enjoyed over the last 30 years — and where it might be headed next.

All six beers will debut at SF Beer Week Fest, Saturday, Feb. 21.

IPA circa 2000 — Nick Was Nine Years Old

Official SFBW San Francisco Collab, hosted by Bartlett Hall

One of the region's youngest star brewers, Nick Mamere, hosts Guild founding members Dave McLean (former Magnolia, now Hidden Splendor) and Ron Silberstein (former ThirstyBear), both also co-founders of Admiral Maltings, and Arne Johnson (former Marin, now Rockaway Beach) for a collab channeling those qualities that introduced and endeared IPAs to the masses.

IPA circa 2005 — One Hour IPA

Official SFBW East Bay Collab, hosted by Brix Factory

As head brewer at Dogfish Head, Brix founder and brewmaster John Gillooly oversaw the maturation and rapid growth of that seminal brewery's landmark 60 Minute IPA. Uniting EB member-breweries along the 80 corridor, this 'cover' is a nod to when process innovation and new hop varieties drastically reshaped what an IPA could be.

IPA circa 2010 — Give Me a Break West Coast IPA

Official SFBW Coast Collab, hosted by Discretion

Coast brewers are spotlighting IPA's transition from brawny, high-bitter IBU bombs to dryer, aroma-driven quaffs that mingled tropical and fruit notes in with piney and pithy for balance. Think Head Hunter by Ohio's Fat Head's Brewing, a GABF-medal winner in both 2010 and 2011, and a perennial exemplar of the classic West Coast IPA style ever since.

IPA circa 2015 — Topper Hazy IPA

Official SFBW East Bay Collab, hosted by Headyworks

This second EB collab, spotlighting Tri-Valley members, is a nod to the beer that ushered in the juicy, fluffy, hazy craze, The Alchemist's Heady Topper, expertly interpreted by newcomer Headyworks, which has already garnered heaps of praise for its excellent hazy IPAs.

IPA circa 2025 — Bright Future West Coast IPA

Official SFBW North Bay Collab, hosted by Old Caz

Old Caz, with North Bay friends, delivers an IPA reflective of the moment. Today's "Westies" are a beloved counter-point to Northeastern haze: lower bitterness with tropical aromas yet clear, dry, hop-forward and crisp, delivering a balanced West Coast punch.

IPA circa 2030 — Hazy Future

Official Silicon Valley Collab, hosted by Narrative Fermentations

The final installment, helmed by Narrative Fermentations with SV collaborators, is a forward-looking hazy IPA built with a laundry list of innovative hop products, aroma boosters, and bio-engineered brewing yeast. A speculative chapter that asks where the tools now entering the brewhouse might lead us.
